In terms of its form, ‘Beloved, thou hast brought me many flowers’ is a Petrarchan or Italian sonnet. And although Barrett Browning’s title sounds as though she is translating poems written by some Portuguese sonneteer, that title Sonnets from the Portuguese was in fact a little in-joke: ‘Portuguese’ was Robert Browning’s affectionate nickname for Elizabeth, so these sonnets are from her and her alone: sonnets from Robert’s beloved ‘Portuguese’. ![]() ![]() It’s a little-known fact that the first ever sonnet sequence in English was written by a woman, and throughout history the sonnet sequence has tended to be associated with male poets: Petrarch, Sir Philip Sidney, Shakespeare, George Meredith. ‘Beloved, thou hast brought me many flowers’ was first published in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s sonnet sequence, Sonnets from the Portuguese, in 1850, although the poems that make up the sequence were written around five years earlier. ![]() ![]() ![]() Can Audie save the day before it's too late? From Newbery Honor author Kirby Larson comes a rollicking adventure starring a plucky and charming orphan readers won't soon forget. ![]() Soon, though, it becomes clear that someone has unsavory plans for Audie - plans that involve the President of the United States and a very sinister plot. I’ve just reread “Young Goodman Brown” with a short story study group I joined via Zoom back in March 2020 right after the COVID-19 lockdown. Instead of Native Americans and colonists raiding each others’ encampments, there were bear raids on our food caches. From my summers backpacking in the High Sierras I shared this view. I loved the author’s lush depiction of the woods - alive with movement and evil intent. He made a copy for me and, feeling obligated, I read it. Many years later, a colleague at the Peabody Essex Museum stopped by my office and said he had reread “Young Goodman Brown” the night before and that the story, one of his favorites by Nathaniel Hawthorne, was just as outstanding as it was the first times he read it. ![]() The novel was a cautionary tale for seventh-graders. The Imp Of The Perverse is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe. ![]() This is a tale of murder and punishment: the anonymous narrator commits a seemingly perfect crime, gets away with it for years, then inexplicably confesses and is condemned to be hanged. He did it in a way that nobody would have thought of doing. Poe is known for his horror stories and murder mysteries, and The Imp of the Perverse flirts with both genres. Poe wrote about a reality, but with a lot of fiction included. Personaly, I think one of the best things about this tale is how he describes everything. About the name, in Spanish it's translated as "the demon of the perversity", but the fact that in English is "imp", and no a demon, is because it really means to this litle imp that tells you to do things that whispers right in your ear and induce you to do things you know are bad, or incorrect. And it just gets better and better. In the end, you understand that the plot is about a person who committed an improper action, and because of that will have severe consequences. The narrator gives examples of that one of them is about procrastination. Then, it starts to talk about the human perversity, and it describe it as an impulse that make us think or do things that we know we shouldn't. In this sense, it mentions that there're two types of people: the intelectual or logical, and the understanding or observant man. ![]() ![]() The begining of the tale is really confusing it starts with a narrator that talks about morality and how God is involved on that.
